O.M.B.

About the band

O.M.B. is a study in contradiction. We are not sure what it stands for, rumor has it that they started as an Old Man Band, but then again they are not really all that old ( and what about the ladies and teenagers in the band?).... One More Beer? possible. Off My Back, could be. Orange Monkey Butt.... Definitely not. Anyway, this group of 4 aging guys in their mid to late forties may at times feel old, particularly after a 3 ½ hour gig, and may seem old to some of their younger fans. But to those of us growing up in our formative years listening to 80’s and 90’s alternative rock, their shows have the right blend of nostalgia, fun, and serious all around rock along with current hits that always seem to have something for everyone. Among the sprinkle of crowd pleasers are typically mixed some slightly obscure punk, ska, and alternative favorites. O.M.B.’s  list of original songs blend the group’s diverse background, a bit of punk, a bit of folk, finished off  with a large helping of classic and contemporary rock.
Typical of most garage bands, OMB started with four guys getting together and playing fun songs in a garage, however with one drummer and three guitarists there was something lacking. Dan Fleming on drums, and lead guitarist and main vocalist John Dunbar’s position in the fledgling band were pretty well set. They had played together in a college band at Georgetown, and brought a solid dynamic to the group. Rhythm guitarist Matt Guelcher brought several years of experience playing in the punk rock scene in Athens and Atlanta, GA. Garage owner, JC Schaub played acoustic guitar, but as Matt Guelcher recalls,  "We said, 'This is not going to work, we have too many guitars.' Somebody needed to play bass, so we told J.C.,  'Man, you gotta learn to play the bass', so he did." That Christmas found a bass guitar under the tree, and sparked the OMB.
Contrary to the their self proclaimed Old Man status, the four friends from Alexandria Virginia consistently please crowds with a blend of alternative rock covers and originals that cross an eclectic spectrum; from The Church and The Cure, to JET and the White Stripes, from Bare Baked Ladies and REM to the Pixies and the Violent Femmes. True to their eclectic nature, one of their originals, Emo Robot, was written entirely by typing one word in google search with auto complete on for each of the verses, and the chorus… catchy and interestingly hilarious. As they have grown, and enlarged their following, the group has added a talented group of guest players and singers to their shows. Karen Fisher and Gracie Schaub (JC's teenage daughter) adds female lead vocals on a number of tunes including an excellent rendition of the B52's Love Shack. HighschoolersSib Sadlier and Sammie Nelson on Sax, and David Fleming (Dan's son) on trumpet make up the band's horn section allowing for some great Cake covers and a few ska renditions of some familiar tunes.
